Common Fasteners Used in Construction

There are many types of bolts used in the building trade, but some of the most common include:

Hexagon Bolts & Nuts

Often referred to as 'hex', these are made from hexagonal-shaped metal bars, usually with a threaded hole at one end. They are often used to secure two parts of a structure together and can be tightened easily using a wrench or ratchet.

Coach Bolts & Nuts

These bolts have an oval or countersunk head and are self-locking when tightened, making them incredibly secure for fastening timber and metal components together.

Socket Head Bolts & Nuts

These bolts have a high-strength, hexagonal head and typically require the use of an Allen key to tighten securely. Socket head bolts are often used for heavier components that require more precise fastening.

Machine Screws & Nuts

These small, self-tapping screws have a threaded shaft so they can be secured into thin materials without the need for pre-drilling. They can also be easily removed and reused if needed.
